City Tattersalls Club Tower
The redevelopment of the heritage-listed City Tattersalls Club as a mixed-use building, comprising a 6-storey storey podium and 50-storey hotel and residential tower.
City Tattersalls Club Tower is a landmark heritage building within Sydney's CBD. Built in 1891 and designed by Sheerin and Hennessy, the City Tattersalls Club is state heritage listed as one of the few surviving city clubs of the late nineteenth century.
BVN won a City of Sydney Design Excellence Competition to redevelop the historic 125-year-old building and design the new tower. We are working collaboratively with FJMT to integrate the project's podium and tower components, knitting the overall scheme to address the heritage, planning, commercial, structural, servicing, environmental and architectural aspects.
The new tower design will merge with the existing heritage-listed buildings incorporating a 101-room boutique hotel and 241 bespoke residential apartments, creating a mixed-use place in the centre of Sydney, and reinvigorating the historic fabric on the site.
The 50-storey building form above three existing and smaller heritage-listed buildings will create an enhanced address for the site in relation to the surrounding context, improving the reading of the heritage buildings in the streetscape and skyline.
Club patrons, residents, and hotel guests will receive a new level of amenity with the design proposition separating the three primary uses (club, hotel, and residential) into clearly defined forms. The hotel mass is recessed above the eclectic and complex existing facades to Pitt Street, with the residential tower hovering above. The fenestration design is inspired and inflected by the heritage facades, subtly linking the various forms whilst delineating new and old. Externally, this is conveyed through the glazed arches, curves in the glazing, and the bronze-coloured cladding.
