Triple win for UQ Brisbane City
Amongst a ‘significant collection of educational facilities’, the Australian Institute of Architects (AIA) recognised BVN’s UQ Brisbane City with three accolades at the Queensland Chapter Awards held on Friday 21 June.
The BVN project received the Educational Architecture Award and a commendation for Interior Architecture as well as the prestigious Don Roderick Award for Heritage (BVN in collaboration with Architectus Conrad Gargett).
"We are thrilled UQ Brisbane City has been recognised by the AIA and our peers at the State level — not only in one category, but a trifecta!" said Associate Amanda Wells-Peris on collecting a trio of awards.
UQ Brisbane City converts a historic bank and its commercial annex into new settings for postgraduate students within the Architecture and Business Schools, alongside a centre for UQ alumni. This learning and collegiate hub is brimming with stories of restoration and sensitive adaptation that honour heritage and prioritise connection – between academics, graduates, history and the city.
According to UQ’s Vice-President of Advancement and Community Engagement, ‘UQ Brisbane City seamlessly blends tradition, innovation, and community engagement. It’s more than a building; it’s a living legacy’.
“Playing a part in reimagining such a significant civic building in Brisbane made this a once-in-a-lifetime project. Until recently, the building was privatised and its spaces were concealed. The transformation into UQ Brisbane City has reopened these rich spaces for the public to experience and appreciate,” added Associate Charlotte Bell.
We extend our congratulations to the University of Queensland, our teams and collaborators on this triple win, and thank the jury for recognising the merit and craft in this cohesive adaptation.
