That’s 2024, wrapped!
With the year coming to a close, we’re reflecting on achievements that made 2024 unforgettable.
What a rapid-fire 12 months with all systems go! We devoted our time to designing 169 projects that are currently in play across residential, mixed-use, commercial and workplace, health and science, education, defence, sport, urban design and interiors.
Many transformational projects have come to life this year including Australia’s first all-electric hospital building as part of the Canberra Hospital expansion, the renewal of Sirius in Sydney, Space&Co co-working hubs at One One One Eagle St in Brisbane and 550 Bourke St in Melbourne, Logan Hospital redevelopment in Queensland, AIR555 at the RAAF base in Adelaide, and new Re-Ply outdoor dining structures in New York – to name just a few.
Alongside restoration of Sirius, the reimagined design prioritises linking back into The Rocks, via a new thoroughfare, public lift and the reintroduction of greenery across the site.
Others have reached major milestones including our work with SHoP on Atlassian HQ that anchors Sydney’s Tech Central, and our work with 3XN on the new Sydney Fish Market where 800 tonnes of sustainable glulam timber beams are being installed to shape the floating roof of this precinct-defining waterfront landmark.
Revitalising a formerly industrial part of the harbour, the fish markets will become a world-class gourmet destination, while continuing its traditional role as a functional centre of trade and commerce.
It's been a big year for forging connections too. BVNers took to the stage at 15 major conferences and events, engaging with audiences on topics ranging from sustainable retrofits to healthcare design to living cities and designing with Country and culture. We teamed with allied practices to progress industry initiatives including Product Aware and Architects with Pride, and spearheaded a new Mind the Gap series on workplace wellbeing to share insights and experiences around Menopause at Work and Navigating Career and Family.
Eleven projects received 29 awards and commendations at industry ceremonies. Notably, Yarrila Place, UQ Brisbane City, St Patrick’s College Scientia Building, Oakhill College Innovation Hub, New Farm State School, Larrakeyah defence projects, Intermain HQ and Maitland Administration Centre all took out multiple honours, recognising the powerful nexus between visionary clients, collaborators and dedicated teams.
While these projects span diverse sectors and scales, they have one thing in common. Collaboration is the superglue that makes each venture greater than the sum of its parts.
A huge thank you to our clients and collaborators who have been on this journey with us.
Wishing everyone a safe and happy holiday season. Recharge those batteries! It will take all our collective energy to continue our mission to be smarter, more creative and better for the planet in 2025 and onwards.
