Wilkhahn Asia Pacific
Sydney, NSW
Completed 2000
The concept of the Wilkhahn Asia Pacific redevelopment of their factory and showroom is to engage visitors in the production process leading to the finished product. The client stressed the importance of integration of both the process and the staff moving away from an “us and them” mentality. The building is entered via a gravelled forecourt providing car parking beside the imposing warehouse building. A steel-framed and polycarbonate clad entry tower elevates visitors to enter at the upper level. A steel framed bridge is hung across the factory and terminates with a stair descending into the showroom. The visitor moves along the bridge overlooking the factory floor, able to experience the movement, sounds and smells of the manufacturing process, aware of the abundant light pouring through the monumental saw toothed roof. The showroom is divided by a series of steel-framed polycarbonate screens, echoing the simplicity of the steel roof trusses, able to be reconfigured as required. The minimal approach maximises the clarity of the existing buildings spaces, allowing the furniture to be the focus, curated on elevated platforms.
